The Basics For New Websites

Building A Website: The Basics

FAQ Answer

While getting a domain name and hosting account is a very simple process, you do need to have a few pieces of information before you start.

How am I going to build my website?

You should know how you plan to build your website. You can build a site in several ways. If you would like the ability to create a website in a way similar to creating a Microsoft Word document you may find FrontPage is the right solution for you. FrontPage comes installed by default on many modern computer systems, and with the Microsoft Office products suite.

Alternatively, you could choose to build your site yourself using a text editor like TextPad or Dreamweaver. However, this method is mainly used by expert web developers. If you would like a quote for having ServerGrade build your website just contact us.

Which domain name will I be using?

Once you have your site, or know how you plan to build your site, then you need to select a domain name. Your domain name can be made up of any alpha/numeric characters or hyphens. The extension of a domain name can be one of the following:

  • .com - Usually used by commercial websites. Eg. www.yahoo.com
  • .net - Usually used by network providers and ISPs. Eg. www.isp.net
  • .org - Usually used by non-profit organisations. Eg. www.redcross.org
  • .com.au - Always used by Australian businesses and individuals . Eg. www.servergrade.com.au

Almost all of the sites that we host are either .com.au, .com, .org, or .net domains. Domains with a country code like .com.au or .co.nz can be hosted and the setup process is exactly the same.

Once you have a plan to build your website, and a domain name, proceed towards ordering your domain name and hosting with ServerGrade. You can order a domain name and web hosting plan by clicking the appropriate order link below our Linux web hosting or Windows web hosting plans.
