Hosts Vs. Domain name registrars

If I host with you, are you my domain name registrar?

FAQ Answer

In some cases, yes. ServerGrade provides web hosting services and domain name registration services. If you chose to purchase your domain name from us then we are your registrar. If you only got hosting from us, and bought your domain name from another company, then they are your registrar.

Domain name registrars are responsible for reserving your domain name. Registrars reserve and then "point" your domain name to hosting companies by setting the nameserver settings.

Web hosting companies are responsible for actually storing your site, and sending it to your visitors.

In general, web hosting is a much more important part of the process because the hosting companies' speed and reliability is essential for serving your visitors.
